CASE STUDY 1

Patient Michael  is having some hematological investigation (pemeriksaan darah).

He calls over the staff nurse and asks you if has leukemis (kanser darah).

In actual Michael has leukemia but the family decided not to inform him at the moment. As a matter of fact tghe physician has had informed the nurses not to inform the patient.

The physician together with the family members has decided to inform the patient that he has anaemia (kekurangan darah) in the body.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO??

PATIENTS RIGHT

During a busy medicine round astaff nurse give the wrong medicine to one of the patient.
It is a simple case of fixing the right face to the wrong name, compounded by not checking the patient name  band.

After a moment panic, the staff nurse realizes that the drug was an innocenr vitamin and as the patient has not noticed, he/she decides that a 'least said soonest mended' approach would be prudent. The incident was not reported.

Does the patient have a right to know what has happened to him?? OR

would he have more pease of mind if he does not??

TO LIE OR NOT NOT LIE???

TOWARDS IMPROVING OUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS

As humans we communicate daily, either through verbal or body language. We too realise that in the process of communication , we lack of many factors which need to be improved in order to enhance our relationship with people.

Given a chance what are the lacking factors that you would like to improve??

EXAMPLE:

Myself as a nurse, i feel that one factor that i lacking is 'the concentration level when someone is talking to me'.
I feel i could not concentrate when someone is talking  to me. This happens especially when someone is talking to me and having a very long conversation. It could be that the communication is very borings or so!!

As such in order to eliminate the behaviour/improve my own skills in communication, i do realise that i need to change the behaviour.

I need to concentrate when someone is communicating with me.
I came up with a few strategies:

  • remind myself not to daydream when someone is talking
  • stick a note at my bedside, saying that i shouls not ignore people

Thank you,
